General infomation[]

2005 Furbys and the Emoto-Tronic Furby Babies are the only types of Furbys to use capacitive coupling (a method similar to radio waves, but limited to very close distances) for communication.

It's unknown if it's used for sending actual messages or whether it only acts as a cue for a Furby to start recognizing the voice of another one nearby. [needs further research]

The communication circuitry relies on two wire antennas mounted on the Furby's inner shell.

However, Funky Furbys are known to lack these, so it's suspected that they're unable to interact with other Furbys.

Microprocessor[]

A single Sensory RSC-4x microcontroller, paired with an external ROM chip of unknown size, is responsible for all functionality of the Furby including speech synthesis and recognition.

It features 4.8 kilobytes of RAM and a proprietary CPU core.

Patent licensing[]

Due to the fact that all programmed behavior (including the jokes, language learning, and other phrases) appears to be documented in the flowcharts provided in the patent linked below, a warning is hereby given for people who would like to avoid spoilers.

The internal design and programming of the 2005 Furbys is described in US Patent US20060270312A1. There's two additional design patents: USD524882S1 and USD526366S1.
