I figure no one will ever find this random blog post stuffed away on a site that's mostly left untouched by the broader furby fandom, but hey, maybe some nerd stumbles upon it and thinks it's cool!

I sure would have, but much to my surprise, despite how adored some of these models are within the fandom (even to the point of spurring OOAK customs based on them), no one seems to have covered the mystery of these prototypes on YouTube or Reddit, so I have set to compiling this info myself. Luckily, FANDOM blog posts are continuously editable, so if anyone happens to find more information about any of these, hit me up, because I'm always looking!

NOTE: Currently, this post will only cover "finalized" prototypes of unreleased 1998 Furbys or Furby Babies, so prefinal models such as The First Furby or others shown on this page are not yet included.

NOTE 2: The Furbys below will either be listed as "unique" or be attributed to a released Furby model (such as Rainy Day Furby, which is a Dalmatian Furby). "Unique" refers to Furbys whose coloration does not match that of any officially released Furbys, even though one or more duplicates may exist for some (but not all) prototypes; this is due to extras being manufactured for use in promotional photos.

Intro: How did they become available for people to buy?[]

As toyarchive.com owner Alex Bickmore explains in his video "Story: The History of the Great Furby Prototype Find", he was a college student in the early 2000s who would spend much of his time late at night looking for deals on collectible and prototype toys. Through this he became acquainted with the security guards, and one night one of these security guards offered him the number of a friend who was in the toy industry.

Alex ended up meeting up with the guy, who was a former Hasbro employee who happened to be moving soon and looking to clear out a lot of stuff from his garage. Eventually, the former employee ended up giving boxes full of Furby prototypes to Alex for free.

Then, Alex listed them on his site toyarchive.com here (if it gives you the "not secure" warning, just proceed anyway), including a picture and description of all the ones he had obtained. Over the years, many of these were sold to places around the globe, but Alex has kept several of them since; he currently owns just 16 of his original collection.

Other versions of some of Alex's prototypes
Other versions of some of Alex's prototypes

While this isn't the only source of prototype Furbys, the vast majority of ones mentioned in this post were either previously or currently owned by Alex. It's also important to keep in mind that there's likely more than one of certain prototypes in existence (although not identical to Alex's), since some promotional or other images (such as the one to the left) feature unreleased Furbys that look to be the same variant as some of the ones mentioned below but with differences in color, eyes, or other characteristics!

These prototypes will be divided into categories based off of how much is known about them, since info can vary based on when each furby was sold and whether anyone connected to it is a vocal member of the fandom rather than a collector who doesn't do much online interaction with the community.

Pricing Guide[]

Below is a very, VERY incomplete list of prices that some of these prototypes have sold/been listed for, as well as the time of the sale, to give a general idea of what they go for/are valued at. All prices below are in USD!

Also worth noting: Alex Bickmore has had somewhat of a monopoly on 1998 Furby prototypes for two decades now, so one can see why he prices higher. Prototypes have other sources, be it via different sellers or someone reselling after having bought it, and those skew lower because the listings tend to come out of nowhere, whereas it's been known that Alex has owned most of the prototypes since the early 2000s.

The average of these prices is ~$1841. Excluding the outlier of the Chicago Cubs Furby's selling price (as the seller apparently was unaware that it was a prototype upon selling it) the average is ~$1990.
